Sustainable Lives

Welcome to Sustainable Lives

The word "Sustainability" crops up everywhere. But does anyone know what it means?

In the broadest sense we are talking about the "ability" to "sustain" human life, community life, well-being and long term health, the survival of the human species on our planet.

There are very many definitions of the word 'sustainability'. Most suggest this is something to do with the ability of present generations to meet their own needs without prejudicing the ability of future generations to meet theirs. In simple terms it means ensuring that any investment you make in your own future, either financial, emotional or physical, for example setting up a business, moving home, growing a garden, will not have any harmful effects on the lives of others, the local economy or the environment either now or in the future.

Our purpose is to help everyone to understand what sustainability is about, and what part they can play in making the future more sustainable for everyone.

Please help us build a useful web-site

Over time, we plan to add pages providing basic information on different topics and issues. We will set up a blog to encourage our readers to suggest useful links, ideas for articles and comment on the information we provide.

The first few pages will explain some very basic terms. We are also planning to make different sections useful to individuals, community groups and professional users in the development industry. There are so many aspects of sustainability it may take us some time to complete the whole site, but we hope you will get in touch to tell us about your own particular interests. We look forward to hearing your views.
